Electronic Travel Authorization

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Who Needs an eTA?

Citizens of visa-exempt countries need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport. This includes nationals of countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and many others. As of November 2025, citizens of Qatar are also eligible for an eTA.

If you are travelling to Canada by land or sea, you do not need an eTA.

Who Does NOT Need an eTA?

  • Canadian citizens, including dual citizens with a Canadian passport
  • United States citizens
  • Permanent residents of Canada (travel with your PR card instead)
  • Travellers with a valid Canadian visa
  • Foreign nationals transiting through Canada by land or sea

How to Apply

The eTA application is a simple online process that takes only a few minutes:

  1. Gather your documents — You will need a valid passport, a credit or debit card for the CAD $7 application fee, and an email address.
  2. Complete the online form — The application asks for your personal details, passport information, and travel plans.
  3. Receive your approval — Most applications are approved within minutes. You will receive a confirmation email. The eTA is linked electronically to your passport, so there is no document to print.

Important Details

  • The eTA costs CAD $7 and is usually approved within minutes
  • It is valid for five years or until your passport expires
  • An eTA allows you to stay in Canada for up to six months per visit
  • If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new eTA
  • Having an eTA does not guarantee entry — a border officer makes the final decision
